Detective MacLean receives AAA Traffic Safety Hero Award

Detective MacLean

Detective Joe MacLean was recently presented with the AAA Traffic Safety Hero Award. His nomination by Operations Division commander Lt. James West read in part:

"Detective MacLean has had a direct impact on traffic safety for the Town of Franklin.  Joe has been a Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CMVE) Officer for over ten years.  This is a very challenging federal course to pass.  Franklin has a very heavy commercial vehicle presence due to two large industrial parks located in town.  Joe was instrumental in creating the commercial enforcement team and gathering the equipment and materials needed to conduct this type of enforcement.  Joe would conduct this traffic enforcement in addition to his regular duties as a patrol officer.  During his time as a CMVE officer, Joe has conducted hundreds of commercial vehicle inspections with the goal of making sure these vehicles are safe on the roads.

Detective MacLean is also an instructor in several other traffic related functions.  He is a lead instructor and has trained hundreds of officers as Drug Recognition Experts (DREs).  As part of this training he has traveled to Phoenix, Arizona many times to train officers.  He has conducted many DRE evaluations on suspected OUI drivers and has provided training to department members to help them recognize impaired drivers.  Joe is also an instructor in Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE), Field Sobriety Testing, and Radar and Lidar certification courses.   Detective MacLean has taught at the recruit, veteran officer and specialized levels and has trained hundreds of officers state-wide for many years.

Detective MacLean has been effective in reducing the amount of traffic crashes and accidents by making sure commercial vehicles are safe and by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.  He cares about the safety of the community and he is passionate about training officers to help give them the tools and knowledge they need to be more effect traffic enforcement officers."

AAA recognizes officers throughout the region who share their commitment to safer roads for all.
