Most kids will be hearing this week if they have made Metro (if they tried out). We ask that you kindly let us know ASAP if you are not going to be playing Rec. Basketball this year in place of Metro. When a Rec. coach drafts a Metro player onto their team, it really hurts the team when that player decides not play for their Rec. team. We're happy to issue a credit on account before the Rec. draft.
High School Students wishing to coach a Recreation Basketball team must sign up on the Rec. Dept online registration page.
Skills sessions will be held on 10/21 for all 3rd-8th grade boys and girls. The Recreation Basketball League has been running skill sessions for over 30 years in an attempt to collect player’s skill information so that teams can be formed evenly. The process takes place over a 1-2 hour period on Saturday, this year October 21. Once all the players start arriving at their designated time, coaches will immediately check them in and obtain height information. Several coaches will divide up responsibilities for skill evaluation (dribbling, shooting, passing, etc). Typically 3 or more coaches will evaluate the players as they perform each skill and give them a rating of 1-5. At the conclusion of the skill sessions, the data is turned over to the Recreation Department and we quickly enter this into a spreadsheet and sort descending. The data is kept confidential amongst the coaches so as not to offend/upset any players. This process ensures that all teams have a fair amount of beginners, intermediate, and advanced players on each team. At the player draft, each coach is guaranteed a draft sheet which will contain all the player’s names, heights, skill rating in each category and a total rating sorted. If you have any questions about this process, please do not hesitate to contact Ryan Jette, Director of Recreation. This process is the fairest, most consistent approach to making sure teams are not “stacked.” There are instances that a player does not attend skill sessions due to outside commitments. But, we can only rate the players that attend. In most cases, the coaches in the league try to assign a rating to those absent players too.
Players in Kindergarten through 2nd grade are randomly assigned to teams according to requests made at the time of registration and school they attend. We do not have a skill session for K-2nd graders.
