Events for Adults

Christmas Trivia Night, Monday, December 6, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Take a break from your holiday bustle and hustle yourself over to the Franklin Public Library Monday, December 6th at 6:00 p.m. for a Christmas Trivia program. This program is free and open to the public.

The program will begin with a brief series of hopefully humorous Christmas cartoons and pictures. There will follow a group of oral and written quizzes with full audience participation. All quizzes will pertain to Christmas subjects including vocabulary, television, movies, music, literature, history, traditions, and more.

Pens and answer sheets will be provided, but attendees are asked to supply their own holiday spirit and sense of humor.

The highlight of the evening will be the final fifty question ultimate Christmas test – the Krissy Krismas Kriz. Be prepared for a fast-moving, informal, unusual and enjoyable night of Christmas fun.

The Man Who Invented the Christmas Card, Tuesday, December 7, 6:30 p.m.

The undisputed father of the Christmas card as we know it– complete with a well-bearded paternal face – was Louis Prang, an immigrant to Boston who fled a revolution-torn Germany.

In Boston, he became a leader in advanced color lithography techniques that allowed him to produce high quality artistic prints, advertising cards, and millions of Christmas Cards starting in the 1870s. He also employed many leading artists, including Tomaso Juglaris, who would go on to create the famous murals of the Franklin Public Library. This distinction gives Prang's products a special interest for collectors.

Alan Earls, local historian, presenter, and co-author of Boston Made: From Robotics To Revolution, Innovations that Changed the World, is offering his PowerPoint presentation and discussion of Prang and the formative years of the Christmas Card, as a special seasonal treat.

We Did It For You! Women's Journey Through History, Tuesday, December 14, 7:00 p.m. on Zoom

There was a time when women couldn’t have jobs and had no voting rights. Women were property passed from father to husband. High-school student Melanie must learn how things changed.

We Did It For You! Women's Journey Through History is the story of how women got their rights in America, told by the women who were there. It is an entertaining and quick tour through the journey, starting with the struggle women had in the 17th century Puritan Revolution through to our 21st century empowered women politicians.

This presentation is a brand new filmed version of We Did It For You! It has many surprises in it for those who have seen the staged version. Stay around afterwards for a Q&A with the filmmakers.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Franklin Local Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency. To view the program, please register at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_QMpz3rizSxmaOOCcZu0ftg . For more information, please visit https://www.wediditforyou.org/ .

December Take and Make for Adults

Make a little something for yourself or add to a gift basket for the holidays. The Franklin Public Library has a luxury soup Take and Make for our adult community this December. Available at the Circulation Desk starting December 1st, these Take and Make projects are first come first serve without reservations. There is a limit of one craft per adult.

Franklin Public Library Book Club, Tuesday, December 28, 7:00 p.m.

The book for discussion is The Martian, by Andy Weir.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive--and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old 'human error' are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills--and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit--he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him? -- from publisher's web site.

For more information, please contact Assistant Library Director Kim Shipala at kshipala@minlib.net . Book Club meetings are now taking place both in-person at the Library and on Zoom. To participate through Zoom, please register at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0kduuppj0oGd1riTUPnGfsy7Qph0W... .
