From Friends of the Franklin Library

From the Friends… We have two great recaps we wanted to share with the Franklin Public Library community. The first, a focus on the incredible library staff and the next a recent author event sponsored by the Friends.

APRIL News: “Thank you, have a great day.” These words are uttered countless times throughout the day by the staff at our Franklin Public Library.

I think we can all agree, the team is always gracious and there to help you find a new book, offer a recommendation or point you to where tummy time is being held. For all they do to keep our library going and provide enrichment programs to our community, we wanted to say thank you and help them start their day off right. In honor of National Library Week, the Friends of the Franklin Library celebrated the library staff with some tasty treats and a special raffle as a small token of our appreciation.

We encourage all patrons of the Franklin Public Library to take a moment the next time you’re there to share a favorite memory or give a simple thanks to those who make our library so wonderful. And to the staff, allow us to once again say: thank you for all that you do!

MAY News: On May 12, the Friends sponsored an in-person author event with award-winning author/journalist Nancy Rubin Stuart who discussed and signed copies of her newest book, Poor Richard’s Women: Deborah Read Franklin and the Other Women Behind the Founding Father. Attendees enjoyed a lively discussion about her book and the research that allowed the story to come to life. Thank you to all who attended, we hope you walked away with a new appreciation for women like Deborah Read Franklin. The Friends of the Franklin Library are always happy to support initiatives such as this one to further enrich our community and benefit all of our Library patrons.

Friends of the Franklin Library is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the Franklin Public Library’s collections and programs. Want to learn more about becoming a Friend? Drop us a line at FoFL02038@gmail.com for more information on the Friends.

BANG BOOM BURN: Explosive True Crime Gun, Bombing, and Arson Cases from a Federal Agent’s Career with Author Wayne Miller, Saturday, June 11, 3:00 p.m.

Federal Agents never know what to expect from day to day. During his 25 year career with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Special Agent Wayne M. Miller investigated dozens of remarkable and sometimes high-profile horrific gun, bombing, and arson cases.

These accounts show true crime enthusiasts what Federal investigators regularly face. All investigators could use this as a detailed textbook to see and feel the highs and lows, with the good and bad experienced by someone who has been through it.  Agent Miller puts the reader up close and personal during interviews, crime scenes and in the courtroom. Anyone interested in true crime, investigative procedures, crime scene forensics, the inner workings of criminal conspiracies and fires, and trial proceedings will want to read this book.

As a Criminal Investigator, Certified Fire Investigator and a member of the ATF National Response Team, Wayne Miller examined more than 2,300 fire and explosion scenes, and testified as an expert witness on more than 40 occasions. This award-winning author’s first book, a Global Books Gold Award Winner, Burn Boston Burn, was published in 2019.

This program is free and open to the public.

Setting off with their pet mongoose, Otto and Xavier arrive at their sleepy local train station, but quickly deduce that The Lucky Day is no ordinary locomotive. Their trip on this former tea-smuggling train has been curated beyond their wildest imaginations, complete with mysterious and welcoming touches, like ingredients for their favorite breakfast. They seem to be the only people onboard, until Otto discovers a secretive woman who issues a surprising message. As further clues and questions pile up, and the trip upends everything they thought they knew, Otto and Xavier begin to see connections to their own pasts, connections that now bind them together."-- Provided by publisher.
