What We Do

The Franklin Fire Department provides Fire Suppression, Fire Prevention, Fire Safety Education and Emergency Medical Services at the Advanced Life Support level throughout the community. The Franklin Fire Department is an ISO Class 1 department.

The Department seeks candidates that have a passion in the Fire and Emergency Medical Services field. Candidates must be a certified paramedic in Massachusetts. Additional qualities in candidates include being highly motivated, work with a committed team of professionals, being an integral part of the community you serve, have a desire for continued training and education.

Becoming a Firefighter/Paramedic is a rewarding career where one individual works with a team to help citizens in their time of need. The skills learned can be used both on and off duty to help serve the community.

How to Become a Firefighter

1. Obtain your Paramedic Certification through the State of Massachusetts.
   • Check the Office of Emergency Medical Services website for training requirements.
   • Check the Office of Emergency Medical Services website for approved training institutes.
2. Subscribe for Job alerts from Human Resources to be notified of vacancies.
   • Check out the Human Resources website. You may subscribe to notifications at the Job Opportunities page.
3. Applicants are interviewed.
4. The candidate is selected, preliminary offer is made and screening begins:
   • Background check
   • Physical Exam and drug screening
   • Successful Physical Ability Test (PAT)
   • Psychological Exam
5. Upon receipt of successful screening results; town issues official offer.
   • Candidate begins and is sent to the next available Massachusetts Fire Academy class (if not yet completed).

Transfers

The Franklin Fire Department does not have a civil service requirement. Candidates from other departments seeking to come to Franklin Fire must be a certified paramedic in Massachusetts. You can check with Human Resources for any open positions within the department. When an opening is available the candidate will go through the same interview and screening process as everyone else. Candidates that have completed the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy career recruit training program should note this at the time of application.
