VA Disability Compensation
If you are currently suffering from injuries incurred during your time in military service, you may be eligible for VA disability compensation.
The VA evaluates disability claims based on three general criteria: an in-service event, current diagnosis, and the "nexus," or link between them.
Although it is ideal to apply for VA disability prior to leaving the service, there is no deadline. You can apply at any time.
VA Presumptives
The VA presumes that some medical conditions are caused by exposure to toxins at specific locations within certain time periods.
This simplifies the claims process for Veterans who meet the criteria for presumptive exposure. They still have to prove the diagnosis of the qualifying condition, and their service at a qualifying location during a qualifying time period. However, they do not have to prove the in-service event or nexus, the condition(s) is "presumed" to be caused by toxin exposure, assuming all other criteria are met.
List of presumptive conditions and locations:
- Agent Orange/Herbicide Presumptives
- Burn Pit Presumptives (PACT Act)
- Other Gulf War Illnesses
- Camp Lejeune Presumptives
