The Cultural District is managed by the Franklin Cultural District Committee, an official Town Committee, who markets the District and helps to organize cross-partner efforts and events. The purpose of the District is to attract artists and cultural enterprises, encourage business development and job growth, expand tourism, preserve and reuse historic buildings, enhance property values, and foster local cultural development.
Being part of a town-run committee means actively participating in a group that is established and overseen by a local government to address specific issues, needs, or projects within the community. Members of a town-run committee are appointed by the town government and are responsible for making recommendations, advising on policy, organizing events, or implementing programs that align with the town’s goals. Volunteer committee members work together to discuss topics related to their focus area—such as arts, culture, planning, or economic development—and collaborate on decisions that impact the community. Serving on a town-run committee also means adhering to certain rules and guidelines, including open meeting laws, ethical standards, and transparency requirements, to ensure that decisions are made fairly and in the public's best interest. It is an opportunity to contribute to the community, represent the voices of residents, and help shape the future of the town.
The Franklin Cultural District is a designated state district recognized by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. "Launched in 2011 by an act of the state legislature, Cultural Districts drive economic growth, strengthen our distinctive local character, and improve the quality of life of families across Massachusetts. By supporting arts, humanities, and science organizations, Cultural Districts attract tourists and entrepreneurs, which in turn help communities foster their cultural sector and expand their tax base. And that benefits everyone."
