Franklin Celebrates National Purple Heart Day on August 7th!

Quilts of Valor Also Awarded

Franklin celebrated its second Purple Heart Day as a Purple Heart Community on Saturday, August 7 with a ceremony and luncheon hosted by the Franklin Elks Lodge #2136.

The Purple Heart is a United States military decoration awarded in the name of the President to those wounded or killed while serving in the U.S. military on or after April 5, 1917. The Purple Heart is the oldest military award still given to U.S. military members.

Along with recognizing eighteen Purple Heart recipients from Franklin, the Quilts of Valor Foundation awarded quilts to eight Franklin veterans. The personalized quilts were presented by Theresa Perreault, Massachusetts State Coordinator for the Quilts of Valor Foundation.

Founded in 2003 by Catherine Roberts, Quilts of Valor's mission is to cover service members or veterans who have been touched by war with the healing power of quilts made specifically for them. For more information about Quilts of Valor, go to: qovf.org.

If you (or a family member) are a Purple Heart recipient from Franklin, please notify the Veterans' Services Office so that we can add your name to our Purple Heart database.
